“There’s a lot more going on beneath the surface of your teeth than you think…”
And that’s the honest truth. We get it, dental X-rays can seem unnecessary, especially when your teeth feel fine and your smile looks good in the mirror. Maybe you’re worried about cost. Or you’re nervous about the idea of “radiation.” Or you’ve just never really understood what X-rays are meant to find in the first place.
At The Gentle Dentist, we hear those questions all the time, and you deserve the answers. Dental X-rays are a tool that helps us spot issues early and maintain your smile’s health for the long run.
And yes, we recommend them every year, even if everything seems fine, because small changes can happen quickly. Annual X-rays give us a behind-the-scenes view, so we can catch issues early before they turn into something painful, expensive, or irreversible.
So let’s talk about what dental X-rays are for and why you might need one at your next check-up.
What Are Dental X-Rays and How Do They Work?
Dental X-rays allow us to see the parts of your mouth that aren’t visible during a regular check-up. While we can spot a lot just by looking in your mouth, there’s a whole world hiding beneath the surface, inside your teeth, under your gums, and along the jawbone. That’s why we need some X-rays to see what’s happening.
Dental X-rays use a small amount of radiation to create images of the inside of your mouth. These images show us what the naked eye can’t see.
At The Gentle Dentist, we use digital X-ray technology, which means:
- Lower radiation exposure
- Instant results
- Better image quality
It’s quick, it’s safe, and it’s often done right in the chair during your routine visit. You won’t feel a thing, and the entire process takes just a few minutes.
Sometimes, though, we might need what patients call “the big machine.” That’s the panoramic X-ray. You’ll stand or sit still while the machine slowly rotates around your head to capture a full view of your entire mouth and jaw. This helps spot wisdom teeth, check jaw development, or plan more complex treatments. It’s still digital, still safe, and just as gentle. It just gives us a wider-angle view.
Maybe you’ve had questions about dental X-rays or wondered whether you really need them. Don’t worry, we’re here to give you the answers and make sure you understand every part of your care.
If it’s time for your next check-up or if you’re overdue for an X-ray, we’re ready when you are. Book a visit, and we’ll make sure your teeth are healthy, both above and below the surface.
What Dental X-Rays Can Detect That Visual Exams Can’t
So, you brush twice a day, floss (most of the time), and your teeth look pretty good, so why would your dentist need more than a quick glance to check things out? Because some of the most serious dental problems are under the surface, they don’t hurt. They don’t show. And they don’t give you any warning until they’re already a big problem.
Dental X-rays help us detect:
- Cavities between the teeth (where toothbrushes can’t reach)
- Infections or abscesses near the root
- Gum disease and bone loss that may be invisible above the gums
- Impacted or unerupted teeth, like wisdom teeth, hiding below the surface
- Cracks, fractures, or damage under old fillings or crowns
- Cysts and tumours, which are rare but important to catch early
A visual exam gives us part of the picture, but not the full story. With X-rays, we’re not guessing. We’re diagnosing. And that means we can offer treatment options before minor problems turn into big ones.
Types of Dental X-Rays and What Each One Shows
There are many different types of dental X-rays. Depending on your age, symptoms, or treatment plan, we use different types to get the information we need.
Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of dental X-rays:
Bitewing X-Rays
These are the ones you’re probably most familiar with. You bite down on a small tab while the X-ray captures the top and bottom teeth in one area.
Bitewing X-rays Are Used for:
- Spotting decay between teeth
- Checking your fillings
- Monitoring bone levels for signs of gum disease
Research shows that bitewings are highly effective for detecting interproximal (between the teeth) cavities, often before they become visible or symptomatic.
Periapical X-Rays
These X-rays focus on a specific tooth, from the crown to the root tip and surrounding bone. It’s done in the same way as a bitewing X-ray but we angle it slightly differently so that we can see one single tooth.
Periapical X-Rays Are Used for:
- Diagnosing abscesses or infections
- Evaluating root canal issues
- Checking for bone loss at the tip of the root
These are super important for endodontic evaluations, helping avoid unnecessary extractions by confirming the presence and extent of infection.
Panoramic X-Rays
This is the “big machine” we mentioned earlier. It rotates around your head to capture your entire mouth in a single image.
Panoramic X-Rays Used for:
- Assessing wisdom teeth
- Planning orthodontic treatment
- Checking for jaw issues, cysts, or tumours
- Tracking development in children and teens
Panoramic X-rays are commonly used in surgical planning because they provide a broad overview of the maxillofacial region.
Each type of X-ray has a different role in helping us give you accurate, safe, and personalised care. Most patients don’t need every type, just the one(s) best suited to their individual needs. There are other specialised X-rays used in dentistry, but these are the ones you’re most likely to come across during a routine visit or treatment plan.

How Often Do You Need Dental X-Rays?
It’s one of the most common questions we get: “Do I really need dental X-rays every year?” And the answer is, it depends on you. There’s no one-size-fits-all rule, but general guidelines help us decide how often X-rays are necessary to protect your oral health.
According to the American Dental Association (ADA) and South African Dental Association (SADA), the frequency of dental X-rays should be based on your age, risk level, and oral health history.
Dental X-Ray Timelines for Different Patients
- Children and Teens:
Still-growing mouths need closer monitoring. New teeth, developing jaws, and a higher risk of cavities mean X-rays may be recommended every 6–12 months. - Adults with a history of tooth decay or gum disease:
You might need X-rays 6-monthly, to catch issues before they become painful or expensive. - Low-risk adults with healthy:
6-12 monthly may be enough, especially if you’ve had no new concerns and brush, floss, and check in regularly. - New patients:
If you’re new to our practice, we’ll often start with a complete set of X-rays to understand your baseline, especially if we don’t have access to recent images.
The ADA’s guidelines suggest “individualized care,” noting that annual bitewing X-rays are appropriate for patients at high risk of decay, while those at low risk may only need them every 2–3 years.
We always weigh the need for X-rays with your individual risk factors, not just your calendar. If you’ve been coming regularly and have a healthy mouth, you may need them less often. But if you’re prone to decay, have had recent dental work, or are experiencing symptoms, we’ll recommend them sooner.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe for Children and Pregnant Women?
We know the word “radiation” is scary, especially if you’re a parent, pregnant, or just health-conscious. So let’s clear it up: yes, dental X-rays are safe. In fact, modern dental X-rays use such low levels of radiation that the risk is considered minimal, especially when weighed against the benefits of early diagnosis.
At The Gentle Dentist, we use digital X-rays, which reduce radiation exposure by up to 90% compared to traditional film X-rays. For perspective, a single bitewing X-ray will expose you to roughly the same amount of radiation you’d get from a flight between Joburg and Cape Town.
What About Dental X-rays for Kids?
Children often need X-rays more frequently because their teeth and jaws are still developing, and they’re at a higher risk for cavities. But we take every precaution:
- Only the X-rays that are truly necessary are taken
- Our digital system keeps radiation exposure extremely low
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the diagnostic benefits of dental X-rays far outweigh the small risks, especially when proper shielding is used.
And Dental X-rays During Pregnancy?
If you’re pregnant, always let us know, even if it’s early. While dental X-rays are considered safe during pregnancy, especially with proper shielding, we often postpone them unless they’re urgent. Emergency treatment and pain relief take priority, but routine images can usually wait until after the baby arrives.
Health authorities, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), agree that dental X-rays can be safely performed during pregnancy with appropriate protection.
At the end of the day, our goal is always to protect your overall health, not just your teeth. If you ever have questions or concerns about dental X-rays, we’ll walk you through everything before we begin.

What Happens If You Skip Dental X-Rays?
If it’s been a few years since your last dental X-ray, it’s worth understanding why you might need one now.
Dental issues don’t always make themselves known right away. And while we’ve already discussed what X-rays can detect, this is where we examine why the timing of your dental X-rays is important.
Skipping regular dental X-rays could mean:
- Missing the early window where treatment is quick and simple
- Only catching problems once they become painful or costly
- Needing more invasive treatments like root canals or extractions
- Unexpected surprises during procedures like fillings or crowns
Think of X-rays as part of your preventive care plan, not just an add-on. They help us track changes over time, not just diagnose what’s already wrong. If you’re not sure when you last had one, we can check your records and guide you from there.
